The Readables
Daring to go where others fear to read...
Darton High School English Department has launched an exciting new project - The Readables! The newly launched book group is initially shadowing the Carnegie Children's Book Award, however it is anticipated that the group will grow and begin to choose its own books for reading and reviewing.
Encouraging reading for pleasure is an incredibly important aspect of the group, as well as the other obvious benefits of improving all aspects of literacy.
The short list includes books that feature Arthurian legends, crusaders, love stories, family mysteries, the Apache nation, friendships, rivalry, magic and boarding schools! As diverse as they are, the books all deal with issues that face young people, no matter what their background or culture. Literature has always been a tool with which to help children make difficult life choices and these books certainly do that.
Students who participate will receive a membership card which allows them into the dining hall for the first sitting, a certificate and the chance to win a prize at the end of term!
Most excitingly all reviews are being posted online here, on the Carnegie website and the newly created 'The Readables' wiki! To read and comment on the reviews please use the side menu.
Any suggestions for future books to read and review are greatly accepted from students, staff, parents and carers - please email r.hodkin@barnsley.org
Any student interested in joining the group should either come along to the library on Monday lunchtime (12.45 - 1.15pm), ask their English teacher or talk to Mrs Gracie or Mr Jay.
