Mapplewell & Staincross Greenspace & Recreation Group

Mapplewell and Staincross Greenspace and Recreation Group consists of a mix of local professional people, businessmen and retired volunteers with a wide range of skills who wish to maintain, improve and create areas of greenspace and recreational areas within the village.

The birth of the group some 4 years ago saw the local park unused, with outdated and vandalised facilities resulting in a lack of use. The vision we had was that if the facilities were improved then ownership would follow, kids would move from the streets and become fitter and healthier and vandalism would be reduced. It was hoped the introduction of play areas would lead to youngsters at the lower age group burning energy in the park on their way home from the local schools and as a by product new friendships would be made between children and parents to the benefit of the community.

Over the past 3 years the group has worked with specialist members of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and local councillors who regularly attend our meetings. In response to our visions and concerns funding has been secured and we have had a significant input into the design and costs of several projects.

Group tasks have varied from arranging and carrying out litter picks and graffiti removal to major projects costing £100,000.
