English Language Paper 1
9:00am 8th June
Section A - Reading
  • You are advised to spend 55 minutes on Section A
  • You are given a passage and 4 questions
  • Each question is worth 10 marks
  • You must answer all 4 questions
  • Give equal time to each question:
    • 6 minutes to read the passage
    • 12 minutes on each question
  • Your answers should be roughly the same length, about a side of A4
Remember...
There is no point writing loads for question 1 and nothing for question 4 because you ran out of time. Watch the clock! Be strict with yourself. You can always come back to finish an answer.
Section B1 - Writing Description
  • You are advised to spend 25 minutes writing a description for Section B1
  • The description is worth 20 marks
  • Divide your time up:
    • 5 minutes - planning
    • 15 minutes - writing
    • 5 minutes - checking
  • Write at least one side of A4 (no less, but not much more)
  • Aim for 4 - 5 good paragraphs (3 minimum - 6 maximum)
Remember...
Timing is key...you are being assessed on the quality of your writing skills...plan and check your work carefully.
Section B2 - Writing Personal/Narrative
  • You are advised to spend about 40 minutes on section B2
  • The personal or narrative writing is worth 20 marks
  • Divide up your time:
    • 5 - 10 minutes planning
    • 25 - 30 minutes writin
    • 5 minutes checking
  • Write 2 sides of A4 (3 max.)
  • Be selective of what you include and the words you choose
  • Use paragraphs.
Remember...
Timing is the key. Quality rather than quantity.

Section A - Reading
  • You are advised to spend 50 minutes on Section A
  • You are given non-fiction/media passages and 4 questions
  • Each question is worth 10 marks
  • You must answer all 4 questions
  • Give equal time to each question:
    • 6 minutes to read (skim read) the passages
    • 11 minutes on each question
  • Your answers should be roughly the same length, about a side of A4
Remember...

Section B - Writing - Transactional
  • You must do both of the tasks in Section B
  • Each is worth 20 marks and you are expected to spend about 35 minutes on each
  • Divide up your time:
    • 5-10 minutes - planning
    • 20-25 minutes - writing
    • 5 minutes - checking
  • Each question will tell you the length required eg. 'one to two pages in your answer book' - stick to it
  • Take special care with handwriting, spelling, punctuation and layout

English Literature Paper

Answer three questions

  • One from Section A - Of Mice and Men ONLY
  • Answer one from Section B - Blood Brothers ONLY
  • Answer one question from Section C - Unseen Poetry ONLY

All questions in Sections A and B consist of two parts. Part (a) is based on an extract from the set text. You are then asked to answer either (b) or (c), which requires some longer writing on the text.

The paper is divided into three sections:

  • Section A: 30 marks
  • Section B: 30 marks
  • Section C: 10 marks

You are advised to spend your time as follows:

  • Section A - about one hour
  • Section B - about one hour
  • Section C - about 30 minutes

When answering ALL three questions, use examples and evidence from the text. Use quotes (copied from the extracts or the poem) if you can OR refer as closely to the text as possible from your memory.
