About the Geography Department at Darton High School
The geography department is extremely passionate and committed to delivering inspiring, up to date and fun lesson to all pupils. The main aims of the department is for pupils to enjoy learning about the world we live in, while developing fundamental geographical skills which can be transferred to other subjects and into their daily lives. While learning about what is happening in the world, pupils will also develop their personal learning and thinking skills which are embedded within the topics pupils study.
We want pupils to understand the world they live in, their place in the world, the impacts they have and the difference they can make at local, regional, national and international scale.
The department is housed in three classrooms within its own separate block of the school. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards allowing lessons to be as interactive as possible. Geographical equipment is available and is used during on site fieldwork activities. The department also has access to an excellent learning resource centre, various computer suites and a range of AV / DV equipment.
A large range of fiction and non fiction books are available within the department to support the pupils learning about the different aspects of the curriculum.
Extra-Curricular Activities
The subject allows many opportunities for extra curricular activities.
A weekly geography club is held allowing KS3 pupils to delve that little bit further into the topics that they are learning.
Fieldwork activities within the school site are carried out including field sketching, and microclimate investigations.
Off site fieldwork is carried out at KS3 and in year 10. At KS3 field trips are carried out as a rewards trip for those pupils who have shown excellent commitment and a positive motivation to learning. The fieldtrips that are currently carried out are:
- Austerfield Study Centre - map skills
- Tropical World
- Whirlow Farm
- Cranedale Residential centre
