Y8 Visit To London

100 year 8 students and 6 staff went to the Tower of London on Monday 28th April 2008 to find out about the many famous prisoners held there, and the many different forms of torture and punishments that took place in the past. The day began well with all 100 pupils on the buses and away from Darton by 7.15. Pupils were in good spirits on the journey to London despite traffic jams on the infamous M1 and were delighted to stop at the services to enjoy a snack!

We arrived at the Tower at 1.30 after horrendous traffic delays in central London but again pupils had remained in high spirits. On entering the Tower, pupils were treated to a half an hour presentation by costume interpreters all about Imprisonment and Torture at the Tower. After that pupils were able to explore the Tower in groups. Many pupils got chance to see the Crown Jewels, the ravens (apparently if the ravens leave the Tower, the monarchy will fall!) and the Bloody Tower where the names of past prisoners are etched on the walls. Pupils also visited the many gift shops, treating themselves to pens, postcards, and replica crowns and jewels.

We left the Tower at 4.30 in order to return to Darton at a reasonable time, we would have liked to have spent longer there but the traffic conditions had held us up in London. We arrived back in Darton at 9.15 to be welcomed by parents.

An enjoyable day was had by the majority of pupils and staff, it was just a shame about the traffic jams, but that's London!
